Has been informed of [Harold J.] Laski's mention of him in New Republic article (July 12, 1939); not certain praise by Laski to be desired; has not seen Oswald Garrison Villard's article in Nation to which Burlingham referred; has no sympathy with purely destructive criticism; failure of Congress to act on neutrality matter distressing; Secretary [of State Cordell Hull] has made valiant fight for proper stand on subject; political pot boiling; Hull would be easy man to elect, but not so easy to nominate; strong feeling against third term might defeat best and most popular candidate; Hull tough, with courage, tenacity and breadth of vision which makes him joy to work with, but doubts he has presidential ambitions; has had trying winter, but leaving with wife on Saturday for, hopefully, a month on Cape Cod.
