Abstract

Description

Received Heineman's message regarding Brussels meeting; took matter up with Undersecretary [Sumner Welles] in absence of Secretary; he assured that message would receive full consideration in the proper places; received press message over ticker at almost same time giving King Leopold's plans; impossible to keep anything from press these days; has heard [Neville] Chamberlain made speech before Commons and German reply expected hourly; is glad British have stood firm; to give way on Danzig now would mean partition of Poland and war anyway; hopes war can be avoided but also that peace won't be purchased at too great a price; hopes Heineman and Mrs. Heineman will come over in September.
