Abstract
Description
Photocopy. Original in Historical Society of Delaware. Pays tribute to Cordell Hull, and presents intimate picture of his character, personality and achievements; completely obsessed by his work, he enjoyed few recreations and disliked social life, preferring to spend his evenings quietly at home; he enjoyed most people, but the few he disliked he would rarely see; describes his association with President Roosevelt, who rarely disagreed with him in matters of Foreign policy, with Henry Morganthau, [Harry Hines] Woodring, and Harold Ickes, whom he saw as little of as possible, and with Sumner Welles, whose abilities Hull respected, but between whom a coolness sprang up through no fault of Hull's; Messersmith cherishes Hull's friendship and confidence and believes history will record him as the greatest Secretary of State to date.
