Appreciates Jackson's letter of Jan. 31; read with interest editorial on Hitler's anniversary speech in [New Haven] Register; wishes other papers had given as much attention to Hitler's extraordinary statement; it shows how misinformed he is or how he twists information to serve any purpose; calls attention to despatch by [Wallace R.]Deuel in Chicago Daily News covering article in leading Hamburg paper on the mistreatment of German minority in U.S.; Colin Ross, a German now in America, has written book in which he speaks of German minority in America as the element which has produced everything worthwhile and must naturally control: now he goes about country lecturing; U.S. Government on his trail and hopefully he will soon be deported; German papers full of articles on German minorities in South America and their lack of political rights; degree to which Germany was interfering in Brazilian politics led to expulsion of German Ambassador [Karl] Ritter; Italian activities in South America have been less objectionable than those of Germany; German activity more successful in Central America and Mexico than in South America; no doubt that objective of present German Government is to bring Central and South America within her sphere of influence; Hitler's speech, though quieter in tone is in some respects more menacing than previous ones; it was the speech of a man on the defensive and he may resort to war as a safety value to save his regime; hopes to see Jackson soon.
