Received challenge to duel while in Cuba; Senator X accused Messersmith of calling him venal and saying the Senator was demanding money for his vote in Congress; Messersmith had made no such remark, but received the two gentlemen sent to issue the challenge; as it was the privilege of the person challenged to choose the weapons, said that the weapon would be the Diario de la Marina, the principal newspaper of Havana; as the challenged party, Messersmith would have first shot and was prepared to write article for paper; the Senator could follow next day with article in reply; never heard any more from the Senator, but the story got about, and he was made to appear ridiculous.en_US
