Description | Had dinner with [Ezequiel] Padilla last night; he had had long conversation with President that day, and reported President still tremendously impressed by visit with Roosevelt; Padilla said he and President discussed information reaching them from various sources that some of the republics to the South are afraid of how U.S. will use her power after the war; he thinks suspicion fostered by Argentina and Spain; President urged Padilla to make trip through other American republics to try to dispel these ideas; Padilla said that Welles had mentioned possibility of making such trip later this year; Padilla not keen to make the trip, but said he would consider going if Welles did not; some may say Mexico is trying to push herself forward to playing leading role among other American republics; if true, U.S. need not be concerned; President and Padilla both believers in inter-American action and solidarity; would prefer Welles made trip, but Padilla could do good job; he is convincing speaker and would have advantage of being a Latin speaking to Latins. | en_US |
