Enclosed with No. 1020. Austrian Anschluss a blow to Hungary; Hungarian Nazis exploiting situation; Germany failed to follow up favorable condition; Germany wanted Hungarian harvest, which would be lost if she took advantage of present situation; Regent [Miklos von Nagybanya] Horthy regarded as Nazi sympathizer, but recently has been cooler; Premier [Koloman de] Darányi replaced by Bela Imredy, courageous, determined, and able economist; Imredy regime attempting to fight Nazism with another form of Fascism; has introduced Jewish restrictive measures which may cripple Hungary's economy; industry and commerce fell into Jewish hands because ruling classes considered it work unfit for gentlemen; now ruling classes want it but are unprepared to manage it; Imredy would like to increase trade with Britain; Britain receptive to idea.
