Abstract
This dissertation examines how weight stigma in healthcare settings affects the psychological, physiological, and behavioral health outcomes of people who live in large bodies. The dissertation consists of three studies. Study 1 validates the Portion Size Selection Task as a proxy measure for actual food intake. Study 2 is a pilot study that uses a sample of college students to explore the impact of stigmatizing content in medical settings compared to neutral and Health At Every SizeĀ©-inspired content. Study 3 replicates Study 2 procedures on a sample of community adults, with the addition of the food buffet procedure to measure actual caloric intake. The ultimate goal of this dissertation is to provide experimental evidence for the influence of weight stigma in healthcare settings on various health outcomes of stigmatized individuals.
