Reconnaissance Study of Potentially Eligible National Wild & Scenic Rivers in Delaware

Abstract

This reconnaissance study, conducted by the University of Delaware Water Resources Center in collaboration with the Coalition for the Delaware River Watershed and the National Park Service, examines 43 river segments in Delaware for potential inclusion in the National Wild & Scenic Rivers System. The study evaluates these rivers based on their eligibility and suitability for designation under the 1968 Wild & Scenic Rivers Act. Rivers are assessed for their outstandingly remarkable values (ORVs), including scenic, recreational, geological, and cultural significance, as well as their free-flowing state and environmental quality. The study highlights rivers such as Red Clay Creek and Christina River, providing a comprehensive analysis of land use, population density, conservation efforts, and public support. Recommendations are made for further studies and possible additions to the National Wild & Scenic Rivers System to protect and conserve these vital waterways.
