Description
Was called to Washington recently for consultation, but was kept so busy saw few friends; did not foresee weakness of French and Belgian resistance; appalled by German successes in so short a time; envisages results of a German dictated peace - all Europe, except Germany, disarmed, Germany in control of all European production machinery, fleets of all conquered countries at her disposal; Western hemisphere Germany's next target; U.S. must defend not only herself but countries of Latin America; U.S. rearmament must be rapid and thorough; is concerned about fifth column activities in U.S.; strict controls should be set up immediately, even at expense of curbing, temporarily, civil liberties; doing all possible to see Cuba gets good Constitution and has quiet orderly election; in these times would be happier in front line, but defense of the Americas is vital and Cuba a key country, so perhaps can give best service here; hopes Frankfurter is having etching made by [Oskar ?] Stoessel.
