Increased Nazi activity in Austria; Chancellor, after recent visit to Venice, quoted as saying Rome-Berlin cooperation increased; dissension in Austrian Nazi ranks, extremist and more moderate elements under respective leadership of [Alfred] Frauenfeld and [Josef] Leopold; handball match held recently in Vienna ended in near riot; international kayak race on Danube planned to finish in Vienna on anniversary of Dollfuss assassination, entrants in race to consist almost entirely of Germans and Austrian Nazis; Chancellor formally banned race; new State Protection Law planned to combat Nazi and other radical activities; pro-Nazi [Odo] Neustädter-Stürmer, Minister of Public Security, eliminated from Cabinet; Austro-German press feud renewed; incivilities exchanged at Austro-German border; new commission to be formed to re-examine Austro-German agreement of July 11, 1936 in view of existing misunderstandings; German Minister to Austria [Franz] von Papen attempting to blame Austria for failure of agreement; Chancellor suspects underlying motive of Nazi provocations either to force government to give way to Nazi ambitions or be driven into open as saboteur of Austro-German agreement; Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs [Guido] Schmidt recently visited London, Paris, and Berne, and Austria not without sympathetic audience; von Papen hinting he may be transferred to Vatican; reckoning may be forthcoming soon between government and Nazi subversive elements; trial of Fritz Weitsche, Nazi terrorist, scheduled for June 22; rumored that trial may be used as occasion for Nazi demonstration.
