Abstract
This work presents two strategies to improve the portability of an Excitation-
Emission Matrix (EEM) fluorometer and its selectivity in the detection of
polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). These organic compounds are of interest from an
environmental point of view because they are persistent and small quantities are
sufficient to be considered a threat to human health and environment. The first
strategy is the replacement of a spectrograph by a prism-grating-prism (PGP or grism),
which would facilitate portability. The second strategy is to use coaxial fibers to
overcome the physical constrains to use two spectrographs. Both strategies are tested
in this thesis, and the results show that each one of them presents advantages that are
worth considering.
