[page 1] Morris Island S C October 8th 1863 Dear Sister I now take pen in hand two inform you that I am well [wh two] at present and hope those fiew linds will find you all the saim I received your leter about weak ago and was verey glad two hear from you whel in the first place I will tel you that Joseph Eyers and Joseph Rusel of Compney D was shot ded they was buried the sixth of this [page 2] month Eyers had three or four balls through him one went through his win pipe they wer on picket in a litel boat betwean Fort Wagner and Fort Sumtur [Sumter] and the rebels crept down the beach and fired intow them the rest of the crew got away unhurt I havent much two say onley we still keap gaining a litel ground on the rebels we ar busey all the time building battrries but we cant work onley at night it them for the rebels [page 3] I hurd that John Grubb and Hanah Clair was maried and Hue Davis and Tish Pierce but I hardley beleave it when you right let me no wether it is so or not I have had the chills four days sence we caim hear I had one yesterday George is well and all the rest of the boys from up their onley William Jones is blind at night he can sea well enough in the day time tel Pap that it aint worth wile two get them boots for [page 4] we keap moving around so much that I might not get them if he did send them write soon and direct as befor yours and sofourth from your brother Enos W Pierce To Sarah M Pierce
