[page 1] Near Petersburg Va July th 12, 1864 Dear Brother I take this opertunity to let you know that I am well at present and hope these fiew lines may find you the same I received your letter of the seventh this morning and was glad to hear from you once more we are still here in front of Petersburg we have morters planted all along the line and I tell you they make a great snaping and cracking by times the son is awful hot down here in the trenches but I think hit must be a plegid sight hoter [page 2] In Johney's trenches espacley when our morters comenses throing shells into their trenches their is a power of men gets shot by the rebs sharp shooters thair has bin two men of our regt wounded this morning you wanted to know I wanted eny money well a little wouldent go a mis tell Pap wen he gits them forty dolars to send mee five I hant much use for money here I must bring this to a close for I have to go on detail no more G K Pierce Direct Co D 9th regt p.v. 3 bigade 2nd division tenth coups via Fortes Monrow [Fort Monroe]
