May th 23 1864 Dear parents I take this opertunity to let you no that I am well at present I cant say wat has become of Enos the last I can learn from him was that he went into the charge with us but he might have got wounded on the first part of the chargs and sent off to the rear and from their to Fort Monrow [Monroe] I have bin inquiring of nearly eavry body about him and cant find eny body that can tell mee eny thing about him if he ante their he is dead in the rebbels lines or wounded and a prisner but I think he must be dead our rigment is all [page 2] but to peases nearley all of the officers is eather killed or wounded we have no staff oficers onley the colonel and he is in command of a bigade and Captan Mendenhall is in command of the regt or wat their is left of it I cant see how eny of us maid our escape for we charged right into two or three bigades of rebs and six peases of artilrey they was lying hid in the bushes and wen we sat within about fifty yards of them they ris up and pored in volley after coley I never saw it hale faster then the bullets fell around us and grape and canister farley howled threw our ranks and cut men on the right and [page 3] Left their was five men shot with the flag and the sixeth man brought it off but it was nearley all shot to peases but the bays wouldent leave a peace of hit on the field I have a small pease wich I want you to keap for mee for it was packed up wen the balls was flying in all directions this is the first time I have had to write for the last five days I must bring my scribling to a close this pen is so bad that I cant write if I can learn eny thing of Enos I will write and let you know no more at present write soon G K Pierce
