Description
While in Mexico as Ambassador, was called on on two occasions by representatives of Canadian Government, who were investigating desirability of establishing direct diplomatic relations with Mexico and other Latin American countries; Messersmith told them it would be good idea; Mexico was expanding industrially, improving her methods of agriculture, and raising her standard of living; Canada herself was developing so rapidly industrially she would soon be looking for new markets and Mexico was a likely one; Messersmith didn't see Canadian trade with Mexico as threat to American trade; shortly after, a Canadian Embassy was opened in Mexico and the good effects were those anticipated.
