Abstract
Description
Original in Sypherd Papers. Marion [Mrs. Messersmith] and guests have gone to Taxco for the day; feeling much better than at last writing; and probability of trip north out for the present; has reread [Alfred] Knopf's letter, but still not sure of meaning of fourth paragraph; in conversation with him in New York several months ago, gathered that he thought Sypherd's book a good and a scholarly one, but one that would not be commercially profitable; Messersmith suggested that he would guarantee half the cost of publication and find another friend to guarantee the other half; Knopf said under those circumstances his company would be glad to publish the book; spoke to Walter Carpenter about it, but in very nice way was turned down; would like to approach [H.] Rodney Sharp, and will do so with Sypherd's permission; has done nothing on memoir notes since leaving Mexico end of April; still much to be done before submitting book to publisher; Prof. [William L.] Langer, of Harvard, now reading notes; will begin now dictating the rest of the notes.
