Ambassador [Wilson] agreed to rent large villa for $5,000 a year, rent to be paid to owner in New York; glad Blucher Palace to be repaired; suggests repairs be made by American firms who have German investments which they are in danger of losing; payment for repairs to be made in dollars in U.S.; aided Dr. John Elliot, leader of Ethical Culture Society in New York, in securing release of two members of his society who had been arrested in Austria; property of Mrs. Alice von Hofmannsthal, sister of Vincent Astor, has been seized in Austria; trying to get it released; Albert Ludin detained in Jena, accused of Rassenchande; if brought to trial will be sensational case; Alfred Bergmann should not have troubled Messersmith to send mail through diplomatic pouch; Bergmann's company suffering under German interdict; should attend to his job instead of playing "international politics"; work going well in Consulate and Embassy; visa situation in hand.
