His stay in Paris cut short by news of his sister's illness in Berlin; [Douglas] Jenkins preparing to leave Berlin for London; he [Geist] will take over his duties; had talk with [Prentiss Bailey] Gilbert [Counsellor of U.S. Embassy in Berlin]; Gilbert nervous about Ambassador Dodd's return and his disapproval of Gilbert's attendance at the Reichsparteitag; advised Gilbert on policy to pursue with German government; had talks with [Frank C.] Lee, [James W.] Riddleberger and [Jacob D.] Beam, secretaries at the Embassy; told them that a stiffer attitude was needed in all matters of protection; talked with [Anderson Dana] Hodgdon; believes he will now make a good officer.
