Abstract
Description
Sending to Phillips copy of Jan. 16 letter to [Robert Walton] Moore; Italian Minister to Austria, [Francesco] Salata, has been very friendly; not so reserved as his predecessor; his daughter who serves as his hostess in Vienna, will be in Rome during February and will probably call on the Phillipses; will appreciate any courtesy shown her; everyone in Italian Legation praises Phillips and his family; gathers Phillips has taken Rome by storm; has heard [Hermann] Goering while in Rome tried to persuade Mussolini to change his policy of support for Austrian independence, but Mussolini's attitude remained unchanged; if Phillips has information on the subject, would be interested in knowing it; sailing with wife from Hamburg on April 7 for brief visit home with aged and ailing mother; would like to look forward to visit from Phillips and family before leaving, but if not, perhaps later in summer; Vienna in summer is delightful.
