Thanks Messersmith for Christmas letter; matters steadily getting worse; Messersmith and friends disposed to put too much trust in Mussolini; Mussolini will never play square with anyone nor remain committed to any one camp; he cannot be bribed, but can only be intimidated into temporary good behavior; new row about Alexandritta French have brought on themselves complicates matters; Spanish mess just drags on.
