Abstract
Description
Thanks Carr for advice regarding length of letters; will try to keep them shorter in future; sending Carr copy of Dec. 22 letter to Judge [Robert Walton] Moore; situation in Germany coming to a crisis, but thinks Germans won't resort to war because they know it would be disastrous for them now; sending copies of two letters regarding Duke of Windsor; one has mixed feelings about his abdication; in spite of shortcomings he had many fine qualities; he is expected to remain quietly in Austria until Mrs. [Wallis Warfield] Simpson's divorce is final; had usual Christmas dinner for U.S. official family and invited Chiefs of Latin American Missions in Vienna with their families; had letter from [Carlos]Saavedra Lamas, telling of fine impression made in Buenos Aires by President [Roosevelt] and Secretary [Cordell Hull]; during tour of duty in Argentina knew Saavedra Lamas well; [George Frost] Kennan here from Moscow to consult doctor; seems in good shape and should make useful officer; [James Klahr] Huddle arrived arrived from Istanbul and will spend a few days in Vienna writing up reports before going on to Bern; Huddle one of soundest men in the Service; making little progress in repairs and alterations to house.
