In formal sense, Edward abdicated and went on holiday; in reality, he was dethroned and exiled; impossible as king, he was uncontrollable and irresponsible, completely under domination of Mrs. S[impson]; fast set to which they both belonged pro-Nazi; Mrs. Simpson in touch with [Joachim] von Ribbentrop; Edward had on his side the gangsters (the Fascists and Communists), the sentimental pacifists,and the bright young things - [Oswald] Mosley, Kingsley Martin, Gerald Barry, Lord [Esmond C.H.] Rothermere, and Bernard Shaw; whole affair great victory for puritan democracy; can now get on with England's defenses; air force will not be at full strength until next October, fleet being transformed, but still long way to go; alliance with France - greatest military power on continent at present - a help; must play for time for next months and avoid any complication; German generals just managed to dissuade political leaders from action in Czechoslovakia only last week; Foreign Office believes relations with Italy improving.
