Enclosed with No. 799. Growing shortage in Germany of foodstuffs and raw materials for industry; many older, more experienced, and less radical officers of government are being replaced by younger and more radical men, who in turn are rapidly used up because of over indulgence; in effort to get money, more pressure will be applied to Jews, business men, and all who have wealth; they will be obliged to give up all holdings abroad; army will not intervene, unless there is real crisis, as long as government supplied money for armaments; Churches, both Protestant and Catholic, still suffering oppression, but continue to resist; much suspicion and spying even among top leadership; amusing story about General [Erhart] Milch and Goering; Milch's father part Jewish, but as Goering wanted to keep him, he had Milch's mother sign statement saying that her husband was not Milch's father; the story goes, "Why is Goering greater than-Christ? Because Christ only made wine out of water, but Goering made an Aryan out of Milch."
